The conditions for the game weren't the best to
say the least, heavy pitch, strong winds and hail storms.
Golborne took the game the game to the
opposition, forcing repeat sets of six early in the first half and
were unlucky not to score on a few occasions during the game through
uncharacteristic errors. On another day the ball would have been
caught and the try scored. There was some good rugby on show in
attack and defence. But the conditions led to a high number of
handling errors from both teams.
Simmies first score after five minutes followed a
penalty awarded for comments by a Golborne player following
interference by a couple of the opposition players in the tackle ten
yards from the Golborne line.
The penalty was a surprise to me following the
barrage of abuse directed at the referee by Simms #4 for awarding a
drop out in the first couple of minutes. Surely Golborne should have
been awarded a penalty under the posts for that offence.
A further converted
score after fifteen minutes made it 12-0 at half time.
The second half was plagued with handling errors and the hail storm
didn't help. The lead was increased to 18 points on the hour, once
again following a strange penalty decision.
(their player ran deliberately into a player running back onside)
The final score with ten minutes remaining was a
typical heavy ground try, the ball being kicked through on the last
tackle stopped dead in the mud. Simmies centre hacked through to the
line and beat the Golborne defence to the ball. (on watching the
video the #4 must have been in front of the kicker).
The score flattered Simms Cross who were no better than us on the
day. The only difference was that they managed to convert
opportunities into points.
